Alpacas Farm Walking Tour Only 40 minutes From NYC

Where To Find Alpacas In New York?

We leave on Manhattan and it took us only 40 minutes drive to get to this Alpacas Farm – It’s called Bluebird Farm Alpacas.

  • 44 Willow Ave, Peapack, NJ 07977

We booked a walking tour in advance and went on Sunday morning to avoid weekday traffic.

The Farm is pretty big and super cute, they will tell you everything you need to know about Alpacas + interesting facts. You will get to feed them, and if you follow them on TikTok they will give you an extra bag of food for free.

We got to feed them, hangout, and walk them, the best Sunday activity you can get within a short drive from the city.

Fun Facts About Alpacas:

  1. Soft as a Cloud: Alpaca fleece is incredibly soft, even softer than wool. It’s hypoallergenic and doesn’t contain lanolin, making it perfect for people with sensitive skin.

  2. Two Types of Alpacas: There are two breeds of alpacas – Huacaya and Suri. Huacayas have fluffy, crimped fleece, while Suris have long, silky fibers that drape down their sides.

  3. Social Animals: Alpacas are highly social and prefer to live in herds. They communicate through gentle humming sounds and can get stressed when left alone.

  4. Spitting is Their Defense: Alpacas usually spit to show dominance or when they feel threatened, but it’s more common among each other than towards humans.

  5. Eco-Friendly Grazers: Alpacas have soft padded feet, which makes them gentle on the environment, unlike other livestock that can damage pastures with hard hooves.

  6. Low Maintenance: Alpacas are relatively low-maintenance animals, requiring shearing only once a year and minimal food due to their efficient digestive systems.

  7. Great Temperaments: Alpacas are known for their calm and gentle nature, making them great animals to be around for both kids and adults.

  8. From the Andes: Alpacas are native to the Andes Mountains in South America, where they’ve been bred for their luxurious fleece for thousands of years.

  9. They Can Live Long: Alpacas can live for up to 20 years, making them a long-term companion for those who raise or care for them.

  10. Big Eyes, Better Vision: Alpacas have large eyes and excellent vision, which helps them detect predators in the wild.

The cost of an alpaca can vary widely depending on factors such as its age, breed, lineage, and the purpose for which it is being purchased (e.g., for breeding, fiber production, or as a pet). On average:

  • Pet-quality alpacas: $250 to $1,500
  • Breeding-quality alpacas: $3,000 to $10,000, with some reaching up to $20,000 or more for champion bloodlines.
